Mastery Has No Shortcut
Why cultivating GRACE asks more of us than speed, hacks or clever reframing
For some time now, we’ve been taught to look for the shortcut.
How can we get there more quickly, and preferably without the mess of failing along the way?
Is there an app, a tool or some sort of hack or download that will create the ‘I know Kung Fu’ moment that the main character, Neo, has in the film, The Matrix?
Real development doesn’t bend to urgency.
In this week’s conversation, Dr Jonathan Reams speaks about mastery in a way that feels quietly unfashionable.
He refers to Mastery as a practice rather than a destination or outcome.
He describes it as “microdosing on failure”.
It’s about staying with what doesn’t quite work, letting discomfort teach you something and returning again tomorrow to pick up where you left off and go again.
I sense there’s something bracing in that for those of you who lead, who feel the pressure to know, to fix, to move quickly.
This short clip is a small reminder that depth takes time and that the work reshapes us long before we see visible results.

An Invitation To Share Your Story…
🌿 Calling leaders, artists, thinkers, and doers…
GRACEWorks is a space to explore how GRACE shows up in the friction of real life and what it takes to shape our presence intentionally, rather than from a place of pressure and reactivity.
Everyone has stories, wisdom, and lived experience to share, and I’m inviting you to join me in conversation around themes such as:
✨ The Cost of Performance – when “winning” left you empty
✨ Grace in Leadership – shifting from control to presence
✨ Embodied Grace – what the body knows about resilience
✨ Creativity & Grace – the dance between mastery and surrender
✨ Grace in the Everyday – quiet acts of courage and coherence
✨ The Edges of Grace – moments of friction, failure, or loss
✨ Practice Over Performance – rituals that sustain you
If you have a story (or know someone who does), I’d love to hear from you. 🎙
If this appeals to you, please use the link below to book an initial chat to plan your episode, shape the arc of our conversation, and define the key message you would like others to hear.

Together, we can show that the real advantage isn’t more hustle, but GRACE.

George Leonard in his book, Mastery, tells us "Mastery isn't about perfection. The true master tries and fails and tries again." I look forward to listen Paul. Have a wonderful week!
What a grace and a beautiful reminder!
Especially the part 'microdosing (not overdosing 😬) on failure.' :)
